News Letter - February 2012

FROM THE DESK OF REVD J S CHARLES

My dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

Greetings in the matchless name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

On the 22nd we start the Lenten Season with Ash Wednesday.
The early Christians observed with great devotion the days of
our Lord’s Passion and Resurrection, and it became the custom
of the Church that before the Easter celebration there should be
a 40-day season of spiritual preparation. During this season,
converts to the faith were prepared for baptism. It was also a
time when persons who had been separated from the community
were reconciled by forgiveness and restored to participate in
the life of the Church. In this way, the whole congregation was
reminded of the mercy and forgiveness proclaimed in the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the need we all have to renew our faith.
I invite you therefore, in the name of the Church, to observe a holy Lenten season by self-examination and repentance, by prayer, fasting and self-denial, by reading and meditating on God’s Holy Word, and as Matthew records in chapter 6, paying heed to what our Lord says in the Sermon on the Mount by giving importance to almsgiving or helping the needy, spending personal time with the Lord, and fasting.
Let us also prepare spiritually during this season of Lent!
God Bless!
Your friend and priest,
Joseph S Charles
